What is it about the word “feminism” that frightens people so much? In recent months, as I’ve travelled around the world giving talks about anti-capitalism and women’s rights, I’ve had the same conversation countless times: men telling me, “I’m not a feminist, I’m an equalist.”

Today the European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on strengthening the fight against racism, xenophobia and hate crime. The text calls on the European Commission to add homophobia and transphobia to the list of EU-sanctioned hate speech and violence.

A majority of Catholic voters in the U.S. now support same-sex marriage, according to a new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University. The poll found that 54 percent of Catholic voters surveyed supported marriage equality for gays and lesbians, compared to 38 percent opposed.

The writer is the 42nd president of the United States. In 1996, I signed the Defense of Marriage Act. Although that was only 17 years ago, it was a very different time. In no state in the union was same-sex marriage recognized, much less available as a legal right, but some were moving in that direction.
